The Artist
"Creativity, color and texture are my inspiration with a sprinkle of bling in all my work."
-Lora Armstrong
The Artist Behind the Work.
My journey as an artist began much longer ago than my felting career. As a child, I learned to sew and knit early on; this helped me gain a certain admiration for the fiber arts at an early age. Dabbling in water color painting in high school and design and fashion classes in college, my pieces began to take on a more intuitive and personalized aesthetic.
After getting married in 1989, I settled into a career as a paralegal in Seattle, while still maintaining art as a hobby. Working full-time in the city would only allow few precious hours for my passion, but I still found time as it kept me grounded and happy. In 1998, my husband (Craig) and partner-in-crime and I moved to Sequim, WA; a quiet town nestled under the rain shadow of the Olympic mountain range. We got busy building custom homes and had two kids.
Eventually, as the kids grew up and time became a less strained commodity, I slowly began focusing on me and my art world. I started attending workshops and classes - first diving into dying fabric and fibers, then spinning, felting, and most recently painting. I began selling at local markets and now happily supply to local shops and galleries.
Having now entered a stage of life that allows for discipline and a focus on art, I couldn't be more delighted to share with you my creations here on this website and online gallery.
Please enjoy!
History of Felting
Felting originated in Central Asia in the 1st century, AD, most likely in Mongolia Felting, an ancient technique allows, for unlimited freedom in the creative process and color pallet. Nuno felting (“nuno” meaning cloth in Japanese) was discovered in 1992 by Australian artist, Polly Sterling. It is also known as “laminated felting” in Northern Europe, a similar process. Nuno felting is the process of wet felting wool thru an open-weave fabric, such as silk or gauze.
Testimonials:
"My hat is doing well. I have found it best in the cold weather such as we've been experiencing. It is a heater." … "Thanks again for working with me on it. I now appreciate the level of craftmanship that goes into one of your hats. Their attractiveness is only a small part of the story."
